Dear Dancer and Yogi,
I had confirmation of my geek status this week witnessing how much time I spent thinking about connective tissue, the structural workhorses of the body. Often when we exercise, we focus on muscles: how to get them stronger and how to lengthen them. When we're young, we boost power and flexibility with relative ease. But as we age, as time and habitual postures, injuries and genetics catch us up, it behooves us to consider the role of connective tissue: the bones and the cartilage, the tendons attaching muscle to bone, the ligaments binding bones together and the deep fascia that (among other things) binds muscles together.
"It is the collagen fibers within the connective tissues.... that with age or damage become tangled and short, drawing the muscle and bone closer together and decreasing the range of movement possible." - Bernie Clark Yin Sights
Over more than two decades I have been developing ways to help us break down these collagen changes in the connective tissue, especially tightness that develops around the hips, spine and shoulders. This is the foundation of my client work and the underpinnings of the Release class. For the last two years I have been called to yin style yoga for this same connective tissue focus. We are living beings and by definition, when our bodies are stressed they adaptively change. I have seen these positive changes in response to roller and ball stresses and now I have been amazed at significant and real structural changes in my own body in response to the long held yin poses.
This is amazing stuff. Even if you've been to this workshop in the past, I invite you to come out to the Release class next Saturday. Spend two transformative hours weaving physical therapy technique and yin postures. Experience deep fascial and ligament physical let goes and see for yourself where it takes you. By the way, I am subbing at Deep tomorrow, 10am Sunday Jan. 30 and we'll be doing some awesome yin style hip openers...come get a taste!
It is boggling to watch and feel the dance and the yoga and the physical therapy continue to mold and meld in me. I am so grateful to have lived long enough for these forces to come to such interesting fruition.
